Question Policy for remastering sources

Hi, I have a question and I couldn't really find much about it using the search function, apologies if I missed a place for this kind of information. What are the policies for remastering already posted sources? Is that frowned upon here? And re-posting an altered source, is that also a no-no?

I'm sure I saw something a few years back which prohibited or discouraged remasters unless they were done with express permission from originator...
