Icon4 bittorrent and firewalls

ok, i know that i should know this and i shouldve done this a long time ago... but, i didn't realize anything was wrong... anyway i've been downloading with bittorrent for awhile now... and i was just told that if my firewall is blocking something then it slows down my downloads a whole bunch? i read something that told me how to fix this, but i have no idea what to do-- i got as far as getting my IP address and was then lost. HELP WOULD BE MUCH MUCH APPRECIATED
