Need Audition help to raise (some) and lower (other) levels

I recorded a concert and am looking for best practices in Audition with respect to least destructive workflow. The loudest peak of the performance is hitting around -15db. My claps, though, hit near 0db. Want to boost level of performance and take down the claps. I appreciate any help!

Re: Need Audition help to raise (some) and lower (other) levels

I think most people use the click removal tool to get rid of those loud claps that happen right beside you. However, the best, and most tedious method, is to manually remove the claps. There are many better editors than me on here, so they may have some better suggestions. You could also compress the applause in between songs, then raise the overall volume of the recording to enhance the performance parts.

Re: Need Audition help to raise (some) and lower (other) levels

Definitely run the click removal first. Not sure how good Audition's is, I usually use the iZotope declicker. Then what I've been doing lately with success is lowering the level of the applause (called "normalizing" in Sound Forge, which I use). Zoom in to the very start of the applause and apply the lowering to the section from there to the last clap. Lower it to a level that is just slightly lower than the loudest music. After you do each section give a listen to check that the sound transitions smoothly from the music to the applause and back again. It might take a few tries until you get the settings perfect.

Then just normalize/amplify the whole file.

Here is one I did recently that came out great using this method.

Thanks folks, I'll have a go at it and see how it turns out!
