TTD's policy on PAL -> NTSC transfers?

Dime doesn't allow it, what's TTD's policy? I have a show I'd like to seed but I want to make sure it's O.K. to seed it.

Re: TTD's policy on PAL -> NTSC transfers?

From part of the FAQ: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...eo#faq_ntscpal

Converting from NTSC to PAL or vice versa requires a re-encoding which will cause generational quality loss. This type of conversion is prohibited per the quality standards at this site. Please keep videos in the same format they were originally created in. Remember that you can always play discs that are not compliant with your standalone on your computer!

I didn't know DIME didn't allow this....

Re: TTD's policy on PAL -> NTSC transfers?

Aha!

Oh well, maybe another site allows it. I hate crowding around my 17" monitor when I have a 61" TV, and my DVD player plays PAL discs in black and white.

I think the conversion issue is valid if you use something like TMPGEnc, but using Canopus ProCoder 2.0 I can't see any difference at all between the 2 discs on my monitor.

Did you know you could buy a cheap DVD player that will play both PAL and NTSC? I have a cheap $60 Apex player and it plays both just fine.

The TV/monitor is the problem, not the DVD player. You need to find a PAL compliant TV in the United States if that's where you live. I don't know how to find one myself.

I live in the States and my Sony (the last two we've bought and it's never been something we look for) is just fine with it.

Re: TTD's policy on PAL -> NTSC transfers?

Many DVD players in the US will convert PAL -> NTSC on the fly, including the aforementioned APEX. I have a Philips DVP-642 that offically supports PAL discs on a NTSC TV, purchased for $60 at Target. If you do a google search for it you will find a large number of players that do the same.

Its the dvd player.

You can convert the dvd yourself to NTSC, just if you trade it make sure you note that it has been converted etc.

You don't have to convert and you don't have to go out and buy a new player either (though the next time you need to buy a new DVD player the ones mentioned here are good).

Read my post in this link (Technobable Archive):
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...ead.php?t=6599

IfoEdit is the way to go, and it's free and very, very easy. I have "converted" about 50 DVDs with it.

Re: TTD's policy on PAL -> NTSC transfers?

I think most of the new dvd players sold today will convert automatic.I think the call it "region free" or something but my wife just bought one for her office and it will play pal dvd's just fine. She bought the same "Apex" I believe that Lynne is talking about. The last dvd player I bought {Denon} will play anything also but you dont need to spend alot to get one that is compatible.I do agree that the dvd's that I have that were originally in pal format and were converted to ntsc have suffered quality loss because of it.I do not know what program was used and feel sure it would be out of date by now.

The OS X equivalent is myDVDEdit.

Before editing you need to do cmd-I on the VIDEO_TS folder to be doctored and make sure your permissions are read & write. Hit the Details option on the Info window and then click "Apply to enclosed items".

Re: TTD's policy on PAL -> NTSC transfers?

My player wasn't region free, but I googled it and found a really simple menu hack that worked through the remote control.
