Re: changing aspect ratio ruin quality?
It shouldn't be done in the authoring stage...but to answer yer ? re quality loss it depends on how it's done, working with raw footage vs compressed video, etc etc
More than likely, best to leave it as is The following members like this post: TimJ

Re: changing aspect ratio ruin quality?
if you're viewing in VLC, you can right-click the video (while playing) and go: Video > Aspect Ratio > [your preference]
that will temporarily change the aspect ratio while viewing No members have liked this post.

Re: changing aspect ratio ruin quality?
Depends on the media. You can change DVD aspect ratios simply with IFOedit. mp4, mkv, other files just need remuxing. Or just simply adjust in the player as above said.

Re: changing aspect ratio ruin quality?
Pegasys will full re-encode. If it's standard definition video, and the video has just incorrectly set aspect ratio, you may change its header with DVDPatcher.

Re: changing aspect ratio ruin quality?
I think he wants to know can I take an old 4:3 and make it widescreen. if that is what you are asking, No you cannot. a widescreen tv will automatically play it pillarboxed properly. you do not want to 'stretch it out' to fill in the black bars. you want the black bars.
if you try to take an old 4:3 and change it to 16:9 you have completely wrecked it and it is un-watchable. you have not "upgraded" it as some people seem to think on Dime. No members have liked this post.

Re: changing aspect ratio ruin quality?
and as pawel said, if you recorded a 16:9 concert to a standalone dvd recorder and it is FS 4:3 instead of letterboxed, that is actually a very good thing. using dvd patcher or restream (demux with batch demuxer first) you can re-flag the files as 16:9 anamorphic. 853x480 ntsc no black bars, all quality.
