How to author DVDs from AVIs?

I'm trying to convert some vids to DVD format to watch them on TV. A friend told me to use TMPGEnc to do this and its going REALLY slow. I'm trying to encode 1hr on AVI video to VOB and its taken over 2 and a half hours and its still not done. Is it supposed to take this long? If not are there any good tutorials on how to do this?

Turns out TMPGEnc just made them MPGs which doesn't help me much is there a quick way to just get AVIs on DVDs as video? HELP PLEASE!!!

I tried searching videohelp.com and the technobabble forum and I can't find anything.

Thanks,
Mike

It has been my experience that yes, it does take that long, if not longer.

MPGs are exactly what you want. Take those MPGs, bring them into your DVD authoring software, and create your dvd.

I use VSO and it is slow, but worth it.

I'm trying out TMPGEnc now.

Re: How to author DVDs from AVIs?

you can also buy a dvd player that plays avi/divx files. There are a bunch of these under 100 dollars that will save you time and money in the long run.

Re: How to author DVDs from AVIs?

I'm all for getting a new player for .avi files, but I'd like to get one that plays PAL and NTSC, .avi files, and is also a recorder.

My current NTSC player is great and I have no reason to get rid of it. My PAL CyberHome player has 50 hours on it and again I have no reason to get rid of it. See my dilemna?

The girlfriend won't allow 4 DVD players in the house. Already have 4 VCR's, 2 TV's, 2 cd changers, 2 computers and monitors, 2 AV receivers, 2 DVD players, 1 cassette deck and a laserdisc player. Yes, a laserdisc player.

les sigh...
