question about bad discs
I recently have been reading up on bad media and how stuff can go bad. I got the nero cd/dvd scan thing that will scan a dvd and show parts of the dvd that are "bad". On one dvd I have (dvd9) the last 20% of the disc all came out red, or bad. However the dvd plays fine on my computer and in my stand alone player. Also when I use like dvd decrypter to put it on my hard drive, that has no problem doing that either. So how can there be errors if all that works? Also I know some ppl said that sometimes you can burn a dvd and the sound will be messed up and the sound is also fine on the show. I'm just wondering so I can hopefully get a better understanding of all this because from what i'm finding, I don't know jack haha.

Re: question about bad discs
is the dvd copy-protected? if not, you can just drag and drop the VIDEO_TS folder onto your desktop. then generate md5 checksums straight off the DVD & run the resulting hash check on the files that you have copied to your HD. if it was a DVD you got from here, you can check the md5 generated from the disc against the md5 file that came with the torrent to see for certain if everything is exactly as it was originally.

Re: question about bad discs
it was a dvd I made, I put the vhs on my pc wthrough my vcr connected to my tv card and then used that file to go on a dvd and added menus and etc. I just wasn't sure why, when I did the scan disk thing to scan the disk for errors, 20% of the disc was bad, yet it played fine and I could copy it fine.

Re: question about bad discs
I would do what five said, if the checksums from the dvd match waht you got on your hard drive, just make a new copy if you think the disc is bad

Re: question about bad discs
well I made this disc back in september and since then deleted it from my hd, the disc played fine so I thought it was ok, then I read this article
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm and decided to check it out and check that disc and then I got those results I said. Thanks anyway though. No members have liked this post.

Re: question about bad discs
what's the best way to back up discs. I'm a little paranoid about my kid rock stuff going bad over time and I don't want that to happen. Is an external hd the best/safest and cheapest option?
