video compression - is it possible...and how?
Does anyone know anything about compressing this video to be able to fit onto an 800 mb disc.
I ask because I'd like a copy of this outside my harddrive, and yes...I am too cheap to buy a dvd burner. Is there a free/shareware version out there of some sort of a "vcd" program? Will that work with these 'vob' files? muchos garcias!! No members have liked this post.

Re: video compression - is it possible...and how?
Is there such a thing as lossless compression for a dvd for torrenting purposes? I figure at least there could be a way to compress the LPCM wave stream into FLAC and maybe something similar for the video stream (lossless).
I assume if there were something like that I would have heard of it by now, but just thought I'd through the idea out there while I'm thinking about it.

Re: video compression - is it possible...and how?
as far as i know chachi, there is no "lossless" compression for video...and i kinda doubt there will be, since most people watch on a DVD player...only a small percentage of computer users watch video on their setup, much less have the proper gear to notice a difference between DVD compression and a lossless compression.

Re: video compression - is it possible...and how?
Further lossless compression of DVD video is mostly pointless because mpeg video already employs basic lossless compression schemes to reduce bitrate. The effect of additional lossless compression would be minimal.
AAR.oner: Actually there's a considerable number of lossless video codecs out there, mostly for screen capturing purposes (think recording presentations) or for temporary storage of prefiltered video for multi-pass encoding. However both kinds only offer minimal compression on "natural" video content. No members have liked this post.

Re: video compression - is it possible...and how?
true true ssamadhi...i was thinkin more along the lines of "wav vs flac"-type compression for video...which, as you pointed out, would be pointless due to mpeg2's level of quality...
the real question i wanna know is--when will technology catch up to be able to offer pure dv footage with 24/192 audio for home viewing No members have liked this post.

Re: video compression - is it possible...and how?
Thanks for input....I think perhaps one of these days my cheap ass should just shell out for a dvd burner...might be easier that way.
For now I'll just have this 3 gb + movie on my harddrive until I figure it out. (which I might add is a pretty sweet movie...the floyd 1970 movie...check it out.......) No members have liked this post.
