Icon4 uTorrent and privacy

I don't use uTorrent, and never have, so I'm not sure of this from first hand experience, but I saw a warning at TapeCity (BootCity) (yeah, I know...) about it that I thought I'd pass along. Here goes:

Scary stuff...

Re: uTorrent and privacy

So, what are the latest versions called anyways? I'm not too concerned as I don't download anything illegal.

Website now shows 1.7.1, though my client didn't prompt for the update.

Re: uTorrent and privacy

I'm still pretty skeptical, but if anyone wants the old one, it's here: http://download.utorrent.com/1.6.1/utorrent.exe

It would be nice to see some concrete proof either way.. but until then, 1.6.1 is just fine

Re: uTorrent and privacy

no everytime utorrent runs it tries to connect to swifticab which was blocked by peer guardian for helping mpaa/riaa since utorrent is now owned by bit torrent and bit torrent sells movies on their site it is blocked. i am not sure if it gives info to them but it does connect through dht to utorrents server from what i understand

Re: uTorrent and privacy

hmmm
so what if DHT is turned off, then? Does that thwart it?

Re: uTorrent and privacy

It makes sense that they would create a client that would spy on you. If they can't shut down the BT sites that aid in the distribution of copyrighted material, then they have to go after the users of the sites. It would be much easier to create a client to automatically track you than manually download every torrent and collect IPs.

swifticab is the hosting company of utorrent

this area of techspertise is over my head, but my interpretation is that DHT needs a place to phone home to work properly.

Re: uTorrent and privacy

I'd heard that utorrent were bought out after 1.6, so that's the one to keep using.
