Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

Hey Guys,
I just got my first IPOD and I'm wanting to try and transfer my live shows to it. Obviously if i transfer from my raw files, it takes up 1-2 GB. Any tips on doing this??? Although I hate to compress them, do I basically transfer them to itunes and then convert to AAC???or is there another way? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

you can use apple lossless codec (its in the settings) or if its an older model supported by rockbox then you can just use straight flac

Re: Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

If i transfer FLAC Files, how do I listen to them on the ipod? I have the new Classic 6th Generation model. I looked in Settings and didn't see codec....I need to compress them right?, so that i don't use up all my space on my pod??Thanks!!

Re: Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

okay look in the compression settings (you'll find it somewhere in there I can't look because I don't have iTunes on this comp or else some kind soul will point you in the right direction in the next few posts) and set it to lossless compression. then you have to spend hours transcoding from FLAC to apple lossless, unfortunately. The rockbox team cracked the earlier generations of iPods (I have a 5.5th gen) so you can simply play flac without using iTunes at all, which is what I do. They are working on a version of rockbox for 6th gen but it will probably take them another year since apple changed it all around on the new 'pods.

Will transcoding to Apple Lossless, reduce the amount of gigs for the show??

Not really. They will still be similar in size to your FLAC files.

I would just compress them to MP3/AAC or whatever lossy codec your iPod plays. Just choose a high enough bitrate that you're happy with. 224 kbit/sec VBR should be fine for iPod use.

Of course, keep a copy of your original FLAC files.

Re: Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

I prefer to listen to pure lossless all the time... if it was not possible on my portable I would buy another! it seems strange to have pure lossless audio available and never spend any time listening to it.

Re: Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

well if you can get a slightly older used iPod such as the one I have (80GB Video 5.5gen) then you can put rockbox on it and all you have to do is copy the folder as it was downloaded to playback flac & also view jpegs and read the txt file no iTunes involved. I don't have the patience for all that stupid transcoding either! all because apple doesn't want to give flac support, which their devices are perfectly capable of...

Re: Transferring Live Shows to IPOD..

I threw my Ipod in the trash and bought a Cowen iAUDIO X5 60GB. The X5 supports Flac and a ton of other codecs. The X5 is a little bit more expensive then the Ipod but its worth it. I also think the X5 audio sound is better then a Ipod. If anyone else is thinking about buying a Ipod, I think you should check out the X5 first.

It depends on the usage. I have a 16GB iPhone that acts as my music player when I travel for business. Due to the storage limits I put .mp3 files on it. In the environment I typically listen to it (on an airplane) the sonic benefits of lossless files aren't all that noticeable, for my use this works fine.

At home I listen to FLAC files through a PC connected to my stereo, here I have huge amounts of storage (4 1TB drives arranged in two RAID 1 arrays) and a much better sonic environment, I wouldn't listen to .mp3s at home.

Floola (stupid name) is a good program to use instead of iTunes for loading and unloading your ipod. It's portable and converts, although I use media monkey with a high bit rate for my conversion. I've been pretty happy with floola instead of itunes, its free and it's always updated.

Use Trader's Little Helper to convert coding format from FLAC to MP3, and 'import' the mp3 folder to iTunes. Once you sync the iPod to iTunes, you'll be able to listen on the iPod, and, with the mp3s in the folder, you can burn an mp3 CD to (hopefully) play in the car (as long as your car player handles mp3 discs - which a lot do these days).
